Colorado Rug and Fiber Guild

June 27, 2015 meeting minutes

Meeting was called to order at 10:05 with 19 members in attendance.

Report out of activities:

1.     7 Members went to Windsor to teach a beginning rug hooking class.  14 women were introduced to rug hooking in the class.

2.     Some members attended the Colorado Wool Festival in Estes Park.  Mary Anne felt this would be an excellent place for us to have a booth and demonstrate rug hooking.  A booth costs $250 dollars for the weekend and they also have classes at the local high school.  We want to keep this in mind for a possible outreach project to introduce our art to new hookers.

Wool raffle was held and two lucky winners got to take home some new wool.

One of the vendors coming to the Hook In is a silver smith and Mary Anne wore a sample of his work to the meeting.

Chris S shared her trip to Liberia Africa.  Cheri had donated sewing supplies and Chris shared that the people were so excited to get needles/thread so they could sew clothes.  Mary Anne sent medical supplies such as rubber gloves and they were much appreciated.  Chris S also shared two footstools that she has refurbished and hooked tops for.

Pam S brought in her centerpiece for one of the tables at the Hook In.  She did a lovely job, even spray painting the bedspring to give it that summer stem look.  Center was embellished with embroidery.  It was proudly displayed with the other lovely finished centerpieces.  Our members are so talented!

We continue to look for a volunteer who is willing to go to class to get a gaming license so we can raffle off our group rug project.  It will cost $100 to go to the gaming manager class as well as a $20 application fee.  These fees would be paid for by the guild.

The group rug project was displayed and it is coming along nicely.  The rug will travel to Castle Rock for further work.

Rug display grids that were approved for purchase last month were displayed for members to view.

Gloria gave a treasurer’s report.  She estimates we have $8000 in the treasury.

Sharon O inquired where we were with the search for a larger room.  Mary Anne relayed that to date our efforts have not yielded a suitable location which met our search criteria and members should continue to keep a watch for a larger suitable location.  Sharon and Pam S volunteered to lead a committee to take a more concentrated deliberate look at new sites to present to the members as options. It was again mentioned that we may not need a larger room as attendance the past 3 months seemed to be down and the current meeting room was more than adequate for our meeting today.  However it was also recognized that these are the summer months when attendance is traditionally lower.   Pam relayed she had a list of requirements that was used to locate our current meeting space.  Members shared items they found important- good lighting, tables, handicap accessible parking, central location for the majority of members, ability to have food, easy parking, low cost.  [Addendum-in a separate email conversation post meeting Sharon O requested that the Executive Board meet to approve the committee as this is the stated process in our by-laws.  Executive Board to meet at 10am on Saturday July 18  location: Linda I’s house.]

Sharon G reminded members that she is collecting items for the silent auction.  They should be wool related.

Meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully submitted,

Linda Iriye

Secretary

Meeting was called to order.  At the start of the meeting attendance registered at 23.

Wool raffle was held. Two lucky members- Chris S and Gloria S- won some wool.

Board received approval to buy the grids which would assist with showing rugs.  Estimate was that it would cost $385.  Various options/vendors were discussed. Decided to go with proposed grids which are 5 feet  with the base because they could be easily transported.

Discussed Hook in Dates- Reminder 2015 hook in is Oct 3.  For 2016 we are pursuing Sept 10.  Amy will proceed to vet out this date.

We have been invited to hold a beginner class at Black Sheep Wool in Windsor.  Class to be held June 6 from 9-3.  Volunteers for assisting in the class were solicited.

Table décor for 2015 Hook In-patterns for the spring flowers were passed out.  Members who had completed theirs put them together and they were displayed for all to oooh and aaaah.

Rugs in progress and rugs from the Sharon Smith class were displayed and members shared learnings.

Treasurer’s report was given.  Sharon Smith class showed small positive cash flow after all the funds have been distributed (45.50).

Announced Jayne Hester classes. Dates are Oct 5-7 and Oct 9-11.  First payment is due June 27 $137.50; and second payment will be due July 25.

Discussed the raffle rug.   We need to obtain a state raffle permit.  Chris S will investigate what is required.  We are looking for a committee to go further with this and plan raffle ticket sales, etc.

Items for the silent auction will solicited.  Reminded members that they need to be rug hook related.

Board asked if there was any interest in a weekend retreat..perhaps to YMCA in Estes, or palmer Divide Lodge or Quinberry Lodge in Blackhawk.  Membership showed interest in pursuit of setting up a weekend retreat.

Members were asked if they were interested in a play day, perhaps making journals/covers.  All agreed a play day was overdue!

Meeting was adjourned.

April Meeting Minutes 2015

April meeting

Meeting was called to order at 10:30.

Mary Ann gave a demonstration on how to make the bedspring flowers that we are hooking for our table décor for the Hook In.  The pattern consists of a 4 inch circle with a 3 inch circle inside.  You hook the 3 inch circle and then all along the outer edge is a place for proddy petals.  The piece is then placed over a half-ball of Styrofoam, and mounted on the bedspring.

In analyzing the success of the beginner kits it was decided to change the beginner kit to a heart flag pattern.  The benefit of the change is that we can teach new hookers to hook in straight lines which are easier for beginners.

An analysis was requested of the expenditures for the web site. It was determined that it costs about $155 a year.

Treasurers report was given.  Current balance is approximately $14,000.  This includes all of the class registration fees we have collected and will need to be distributed next month for the Sharon Smith classes.

It was announced that Sharon Gunderson is looking for wool related items for the silent auction.

Much attention and discussion was given to the topic of other venues for the monthly hook-in meetings.  Mary Ann has found a venue that is 40 seats larger at the Denver Police Department.  It is off University and I-25.  Concern was voiced that it was farther for the people coming from Loveland, it is about 7 more miles to drive.

·       Concern was voiced that if we try other locations we might lose the location we have now

·       Concern was expressed that we have had members leaving angry due to no seating space.

·       Concern was expressed that we have talked for a number of months now on needing addition space.

·       Concern was expressed that if we continue to try and goal the guild (which is one of our objectives) that we are further compounding the space problem.

·       The only point of agreement was that at times we could use more space, especially when we have meetings with wool buys or special events occurring.

March Meeting

Meeting started with a work in progress throw down.

Linda encouraged members to look at the updated website.  Cheri volunteered to update the website with pictures.  Gloria requested that we build links for officers on the website.

Group wool buy was delivered.  We purchased from Wool Studio and Heavens to Betsy. All of the wool was lovely and there were many oohs and aahs.   Thank you to Carol H for organizing and packaging.

Five new visitors came to visit-JoAnne, Michelle, Suzie, Lou and Debbie.

It was announced that we had combined some of our Sharon Smith classes and have gone from 3 to 2 classes.  With that decision we are sold out.  We will have 14 students in each class.  Reminder of class dates May11-13, May 14-16 both occurring at LaQuinta Inn 7077 S Clinton Street  9am-3:30pm.

Future classes:

Oct 5-7 and Oct 9-11 Jane Hester will be coming. Class information will come out in April or May and we will be looking for the first payment in June.

Next April (2016) Maggie Bonanomi will be coming back.  We can partner with Black Sheep Wool and Gatherings to the split the cost.  She will be doing wool applique.

Theresa R gave the Sew Expo report.  Members demonstrated rug hooking for 2 days.  Participants relayed it was fun and they had 30 people sign up for more information.

Sharon G and Carol H have compiled a spreadsheet of everyone we have ever emailed so that we can try and communicate electronically regarding guild events, Hook in etc.

It was announced that Judy Kripps had a booking conflict and could not attend our Hook-In.  If you have ideas for vendors please pass them to Amy.

Raffle rug is in progress and was displayed.  It was suggested as you finish your square to post pictures to the Facebook page for the CRFG so that we can see progress.   It is looking good!

Theresa R went to the Wool wrights Hook In.  She reported that it was probably the largest guild.  They had 13 vendors including Betsy Reed and Rebecca Erb.  They presold tickets to the event.  She wondered if we wanted to contemplate preselling tickets.  Pros and cons were discussed. Decided at this point we would not pre-sell tickets.

Discussion of Hook-In:

·        Raffle Rug ticket sales

·        Table Décor-bed spring flowers. We need 20.  If we make extra we can sell at silent auction.

·        Loveland ladies agreed to make a few wool bouquets for the silent auction.

ATHA guilds have operating guidelines. These documents are based on the ATHA National organization's documents and were passed out when this guild was formed, and again when the Bylaws were amended.
I have loaded these two documents on the Guild NEWS page of this website.

Meeting called to order

Announced that several members have had their rugs accepted in Celebration.  This is a huge honor and we want to congratulate Theresa Rapstine and Cheryl Bollenbach.

Next month we will need to draft committee chairs to start working on our 2015 Hook in.

Mary Ann presented  a group rug project to be auctioned off at the Hook In.

Discussed possible teachers for 2015, 2016.  Carol will continue to work and draft teachers.

Shared a thank you for the $500 donation to national ATHA website build.

Discussed possible table decor for the Hook-In.  Members to contemplate ideas and bring to next meeting.

Drafted a slate of volunteers to demonstrate rug hooking at the Sew Expo.

Pam Sisk shared that she has set up a Facebook page for Colorado Rug and Fiber Guild.

A discussion was had regarding the size of our meeting room and that we may need to look for an alternate venue since

Monthly program topic was on how do you store your worms (strips of wool).  Huge thank yous to Jedy Peterson, Sharon Oppegard and Cheryl Bollenbach for sharing how they stored their wool strip leftovers.  Wondering how they did it?  One rolled their strips into balls by color and stored them in plastic containers like the larger plastic Planters Peanuts containers.  One stored them in shoe boxes from the dollar store.  She initially sorted into color and then changed to storing by values.  One shared how their husband made wire rings out of plastic coated wire cable and she safety pinned her smaller strips of wool (not wool worms, but not large enough to fold) onto these cable rings and hung them on wooden coat pegs.  Another member shared  that she had one bag that she used for faces-all size cuts are mixed together, and then the rest of her strips were in a large bag and all mixed together.

Cheryl B shared how she used her camera to establish values and that she wouldn't think of hooking without her camera at her side.

Future meeting dates:
March 28
April 25
May 23

November 22 Meeting Minutes

Began the meeting new hooker Carolyn to our group, followed by our monthly wool drawing.

Amy Miller-Dawson reviewed that the guild has joined Tactile.  A proposal for a group show in March was presented.  Tactile requires us to have at least 40 pieces.  Works can be for sale, Tactile takes 40% commission. You can also sell in the gift shop as a personal member and this costs $15.00.  The show would have insurance.  Amy offered to help hang pieces.  Proposal was approved.

Decision for date of the 2015 Hook in was made.  We will have our annual Hook In for 2015 on October 3.

Two postcards are to be made.  One to advertise the show and one to advertise the guild and Hook-In dates.

It was announced that Amy Miller-Dawson will be running for our regional coordinator of ATHA.  Elections to be held in April.

Free Patterns for a snowman and a Christmas star were distributed by Mary Ann Goetz.

With our guild having so many talented hookers, it was proposed that we have a themed rug throw down.  Members would bring their hooked pieces that coordinated with the monthly theme.  This will be a great way to see a variety of rugs and hooking styles and allow us all to enjoy the fruits of our fellow members labors.  Monthly themes:

Sept 2014 Meeting Minutes

Meeting was called to order by Mary Anne at 10am.

Our monthly raffle of 3 wool bundles occurred.  Congratulations to our lucky winners.

The saying “Many hands make the work lighter” is brought to mind with our guild and the production of the annual Hook In.  Thank you to everyone for the work that was done for the Sept 13 Hook In.  The food committee did a fabulous job.  The Longmont ladies did a wonderful job with the wool flower centerpieces-they were a much coveted raffle item.  Beginning rug hooking class was very successful.    Suggestions for next year:

1.     One contact person to make requests of the church staff.

2.     Easier pattern for the beginner rug hooking class-suggested a flag pattern

3.     Tip the church group

Cynthia Norwood class review.  Good time was had by all. Comments noted such as “fabulous teacher”, “wonderful handouts”, and “loved the mini teaching breakouts”.   Thank you to Carol Howard for all the work she did in getting lunches, coordinating classes, etc.

Cheryl Bollenbach gave a report from the ATHA meeting.  ATHA dues will be increasing to cover the increased number of pages planned for the ATHA magazine.  Preliminary report on the biennial pattern book is that it is wonderful.

Future class rules:

1.     Sign up will occur 6 months or more in advance.

2.     50% of the amount of the estimated class cost will be due at the time of signup

3.     At the time of signup the date for the remaining balance being due will be announced-typically 3 months later.

4.     Membership is required at the time of sign up.

5.     $50 of the initial deposit is non-refundable.

6.     Exceptions for extreme hardship or wait list considerations will be honored on a case by case basis.

7.     No refunds will be given after the point of final deposit due.

Reviewed Sharon Smith class-must do her patterns; can use your own wool; she works in wonderful bright colors; is very artistic; is inspired by Van Gogh; to see patterns visit her website: Off the Hook.  Classes will be May 11-13, May 14-16, May 18-20.  $125 due on October 25 to sign up; Final balance due at January meeting. Rules above apply.  Out of state hooking requests will be honored at the January meeting.

Carol Howard reported that she had booked Jane Hester to come for classes Oct 5,6, 7 and 9,10, 11, 2015.

Gloria Shone gave the treasurer’s report.  Current balance- $12599.44

Gloria also gave the Hook-in report- 2014 attendance was 87 vs 2013 attendance of 89.  Proceeds from 2014 $1029.80 vs 2013 $1087.78.  Noted would like to increase vendor attendance.

2015 Hook-In  Discussion of dates.  One suggestion was to have it the first weekend of Oct so that it doesn’t conflict with Star of Texas and ATHA biennial meetings in September.  Amy Miller nominated to form a group to start to plan next year’s hook in.  Need to find a definitive date so we can start to book vendor time.

Voted to join Tactile Fiber Artists.  We pay a $75 annual fee for our guild to join and we get advertising for our events and a possible venue for a rug show.

Voted to purchase a Steam Pro iron as was demonstrated at Cynthia Norwood’s class.  Steam iron used to steam rugs for guild members.

Next meeting is Oct 25 from 9-4  at 8110 Vance Drive Arvada Co 80003

Respecfully submitted,

Linda Iriye

Meeting called to order at 10am.

1.     Refunds were issued to the participants in the Maggie Bonanomi class.

2.     Reviewed hook-in, secured volunteers for the remaining positions.

3.     Discussed how to handle the two vacancies created in C Norwood class. Carol Howard is actively recruiting trying to replace.

4.     Reviewed proposed class specifics:

·       The guild pays the travel expenses for the instructors we book.

·       50% of the estimated class fees are due at the time of sign-up.

·       $50.00 of that fee is non-refundable.

·       Recommendation that remaining balances would be due 3 months prior to the date of the class.

·       Failure to pay remaining balances may result in forfeiture of the class reservation if there is a waiting list.

·       At the time of signup a flier detailing these specifics will be available to students so that the expectations are set.

So going forward for Sharon Smith sign up in October 25th  meeting this would equate to:

·       Class estimated to be $250.

·       Would need to pay $125.00 at the time of sign up in October meeting.

·       $50.00 of that is non-refundable.

·       $75 can be refunded on request between Oct payment and January meeting.

·       Jan meeting the remaining $125.00 would be due.

·       Refunds between January and May would only occur if student could locate a replacement for themselves in that class.

Further discussion and finalization of this proposal will occur at our September meeting.

5.     Treasurer issued a treasurer’s report.

6.     Sale of linen and red dot occurred from our keeper of the linen-Quink.

7.     Future meetings:

Sept 27 9-4 normal Arvada police station location (where else would you find a hooker?)

Oct 25th-9-4 at the Lake Arbor sub station 8110 Vance.  Be aware that this location is very small and sized for approximately 30.  Please bring small projects or handwork for this meeting as space is limited.

Nov 22 9-4 normal Arvada Police Station location

Dec 27 9-4 Normal Arvada Police Station location.

8.     Meeting adjourned and hooking began!
