President - Mary Ann Goetz Vice President - Amy Miller Secretary - Linda Iyire Treasurer - Gloria shone Thank you to the nominating committee! A new/old Education committee will bring new focus and ideas to our next meeting. Details pertaining to camp sign up protocol and teachers coming to Denver will be discussed. We would like to set up a calendar of programs, so bring your ideas to the June meeitng! ![]() The April meeting was a lot of fun. There was lots of food, a mad dash for our wool orders, a drawing for a humongous carry-all for that wool (thank you Mary Ann). Also many thanks to Carol Rutledge, who handled the order and for everyone on the team who met at Quink's house and helped rip 220+ yards of wool. It is amazing how wool hungry we can get! Another thing that we did at the meeting was draw patterns so that we can join in the Chicken Challenge from the rug hooking guilds in Lancaster County.Read more about this in an earlier post. the paper pattern will be available at the May meeting as well. We will be electing a new Board during the May meeting. The candidates and respective positions are: Pres. - Mary Ann Goetz VP - Amy Miller Secretary - Linda Iriye Treasurer - Gloria Shone During our April meeting we discussed several topics and need to make decisions on those at the May meeting. One topic up for discussion was the need for a routine way for guild members to know about and sign up for Teachers who are coming in to present camps in Denver. The following proposal was made during that meeting: Proposal regarding participation of members and nonmembers in rug hooking camps sponsored by CRFG. Premise: Camps are for the benefit of current, active members of the guild. The following procedure is proposed for enrolling participants in CRFG rug camps: 1. Upcoming camps will be announced at the guild meeting and posted on the CRFG web site. If a member is unable to attend a meeting, it is the member’s responsibility to review upcoming events on the website. 2. A member may enroll in a camp by submitting her/his name with a nonrefundable deposit of $50.00. (The deposit will only be refunded if the member’s name is not drawn and the camp is filled.) If your dues are not current, you cannot sign up for a class. 3. On a designated date to be determined by the guild, the names of all enrollees will be placed in a jar and drawn at random until a total of 12 names are drawn for each class offered. The first name drawn will be able to pick the date of the class she wishes to enroll in (if more than one session is offered). The enrollees will be notified and will have ________days to confirm their participation. 4. If an enrollee withdraws her name or fails to confirm the enrollment by the set day, that slot will go to the next member on the list. The deposit will not be returned. 5. Refunds of deposits will only be returned to members whose names are not drawn. 6. Non-members may only enroll after guild members have had the opportunity to enroll. After the above deadlines, non –members may enroll in the class. Names of interested non-members will be place on a list, first come/first served basis pending an opening in the class. A $50.00 deposit must be included with the request to be placed on the list. Non-members will be charged an additional $50.00 non-refundable premium to help cover instructor costs. Non-members will have all monies returned if the course is closed and there is no room available. Please do think about this proposal and bring your ideas so we can discuss them and create a set of guidelines for our guild. • Another thing that we would like to talk about at the May meeting is what we will do for Programs for the upcoming year! Please put some thought into what you would like and lets get a calendar made for the year at this meeting.
• Further consideration on the table is whether or not the guild will subsidize the costs for camps out of the guild treasury. This has been discussed in the past and current interest requires that we revisit this topic. Quink will have linen and red dot available for those who need it. Please bring your hooking, your good humor and laughter. We will quickly dispense with business and get on to our primary interest - RUG HOOKING! See you soon! OK, I am hoping that you are! I got the following email and would love to join in. I have printed up 3 different versions of this as a paper pattern and will have them at the meeting on Saturday, April 26. If you are interested in participating in this challenge, then come prepared with sharpies and material to draw off the patterns.Hopefully Quink will bring a bolt of linen and some red-dot to the meeting. If you already have backing, then depending on the size pattern you choose you will need the following: 14"x14" square pillow pattern. . . . . .so your backing needs to be 20" x 20" 12" X 23" mini rug pattern. . . . so your backing needs to be 18" x 29" 15" X 30" rug. . . . so your backing needs to be 21" x 36" ![]() THE 2014 WHY DID THE CHICKEN CROSS THE ROAD? CHALLENGE The question above started way back before our time in 1847 in The Knickerbocker, a New York City monthly magazine. Isn't it funny how long things stick around and children yet to this day repeat the same question over and over again year after year? Here are some other interesting facts about chickens and this will all come together.... just give me a chance. Groups of chickens are called broods, flocks, clutches, peeps and just plain old hens and roosters. Chickens can run up to 9 miles per hour. There are more chickens in the world than there are people. A hen can lay up to 300 eggs a year and last, but not least, it is illegal to eat chicken with a fork in Gainesville, Georgia! So, this is a non-stressful, unlimited time offer, with a no strings attached project to increase the number of chickens in our rughooking world. Several years ago, I and a couple of friends came upon an antique chicken rug and we had our own challenge to hook this rug. It is a very easy pattern to hook and a person can use their own specialized creativity to make this the chicken rug of your dreams! I am working on my second chicken rug as a challenge with some friends from the plains of Nebraska and Texas, and the hills of Colorado. This is the thought behind the chicken rug. First of all, have fun with it. Don't worry about a schedule or time to get it done, it doesn't matter. Use any colors, wild embellishments, or any fabrics. Make this a rug all your own and use whatever your little heart desires. When you have completed your rug, email a photo with your name and where you live and we will have a page just for the Journey of the Chicken Rug because, you see, send this pattern to everyone that hooks, your friends near and far here and across the big ponds of water, to your groups, and to your fellow chicken farmers! The photos that follow are of the pattern which you can print and enlarge. My finished chicken rug is 15" x 30". (There are additional photos of the chicken rug on our website page "Members in the Spotlight".) So why did the chicken cross the road? How many roads, path, bridges, and bodies of water can this chicken cross? Will this chicken rug end up in the hills and mountains in the western United States, on the shores of South Carolina, in Ozarks in Missouri, in a village in the United Kingdom, or on the slopes of French Alps? Let's see how many connections we can make around the world with this one silly chicken rug! Are you ready to increase the broods or flocks of chickens in this hen house? I hear them clucking away and I can't wait to see them! For more photos of The Chicken Rug Challenge and our website go to www.woolwrights.com under "More" and "The Chicken Rug Challenge". Be sure to click on the photos for the complete view. Please join on the fun! - Deb Burcin, webmaster of The Woolwrights website, Lancaster County, PA. ![]() Our meetings are confirmed for the for the 26th of April the 24th of May and the 28th of June. We have been gearing up for a summer of wild hooking! Our wool will be in at the next meeting. Many thanks to Mary Ann, Mary Jo, Quink and everyone else who pitched in to help coordinate that packaging effort. We have already started planning the Denver Hook In — which will be held this year in September on the 13th. Location remains the same and you can read more about that on the Denver Hook In page of this website. The rug on the upper left is a rug hooked by Ginny Waldera. Isn't it gorgeous? AND that makes today the perfect day to get out and view the Rug Show at Koelbel Library in Englewood. The show runs through the end of the month.
![]() The Mile High Rug Hooking guild is sponsoring a rug show on display now at the Koelbel Library. Go to the Events section of this website for more details! Pam Sisk has procured the Ann Campbell room (our normal meeting space) at the Arvada Police station for the following meetings: March 22 from 9 - 4 April 26th from 9 - 4 and May 24th from 9 - 4 ![]() Well the year is off to a fantastic start, but today we are about to blow away! Winds are terrific, making this a grand day to stay inside and hook. Our January meeting will be held at the Arvada Police station from 10 - 4. Doors are open at 9. At the December meeting the attendees decided on a bulk wool purchase in March. So, please put the date on your calendar and be sure to show up if you want to participate in that bulk buy. If you have checked out library books, please be sure to return them. There are several that have been out for a long time and need to be shared with others. There is a new nominating committee chaired by Ginny Waldera. We will have election of new officers in May. So, if you are interested in serving as a board member, or if you want to suggest someone, please see Ginny. Your money for the Maggie Bonanomi camp in July is due this month. Please send your deposit check for $100 to Gloria Shone. The final payment will be due in March. Right now we are guestimating a figure of $250, total for the camp. Carol will be able to calculate a more accurate amount this week. Quink will soon have 2 new bolts of linen from Michele Micarelli. So, if you have need for linen backing you know who to call! She will also be getting in the tape for the backs of the rugs. Rocky Mountain Sew Expo is coming up! This is a FUN event that always draws a big crowd and affords us the opportunity to demo rug hooking, and draw in new members. February 6,7,and 8th are the dates. Teresa will be sending out sign up forms — thank you for all of you who participate in this fun event. Meeting dates have been confirmed through March. Pam keeps us on track by organizing this meeting space. February date is the 22nd and March will be the 22nd as well. Doors open at 9 and we can hook until 4. |
